Matt Wright playing guitar in a desert

About Matt

Matt has always been fascinated with music. He started with flute in 3rd grade. Then a bit of piano in 4th grade. Then on classical string bass in 2006 (until he got kicked out of the orchestra because he was bored)… Then on French horn in 2010 (10th grade).

Matt won a half-ride scholarship to Texas Christian University, and then transferred to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied French horn. He graduated in 2017 with a degree in Music Performance and a minor in Digital Media.

Matt first started playing guitar in December 22nd, 2018 after his older brother gifted him a $100 used guitar.

In 2021, he decided he wanted to take it seriously, so he sold his French horn and bought his first “professional” guitar. He not only invested many hours in practice, but into many of the most well-renowned teachers and masterclasses.

Combining his music conservatory background and passion for teaching, he started his YouTube channel in 2022, which has grown past 20,000 subscribers and 1,000,000 views. His videos are well loved for their extremely in-depth look at technique.

In 2023, frustrated with speed barriers, Matt looked to neuroscience and found new ways to apply this information to guitar. In just 6 months, he improved his constant 16th-note picking speed from ~140 bpm, 36% up to 192 bpm, a 36% improvement. And he's still improving his technique using the same methods. Matt codified this method into a program called Perfect Picking which has helped over 400 students multiple speed up their playing while eliminating pain and tension… Most notably with the exact same form as Matt. Matt’s work has since been endorsed by numerous scientific professionals from the fields of neuroscience, psychology, and biomechanics.

Matt’s biggest inspirations are Dream Theater, the Neal Morse Band, Devin Townsend, and Symphony X. Matt is also a big fan of John Mayer, My Chemical Romance, HIM, and Lady Gaga.

Matt is currently the lead guitarist for CHRISTOPHER SHAYNE, which has opened for ZZ Top, Godsmack, and Molly Hatchet, among others.
